Sacramento Information

One of the largest cities in California, Sacramento is the state capital. Located along the Sacramento River and just south of the American River, the city consists of modern architecture juxtaposed with rustic scenery. During the California Gold Rush, Sacramento was a major distribution point, a commercial and agricultural center, and a terminus for wagon trains, stagecoaches, riverboats, the telegraph, the Pony Express, and the First Transcontinental Railroad. Former residents John Sutter and James W. Marshall were instrumental in the establishment of the city and Sutter’s Fort, which is a National Historic Landmark today.

Government and transportation are the largest sectors of employment in Sacramento. While still important, agriculture and mining have been surpassed by information technology service, leisure and hospitality, education and health services, and construction. Among Sacramento's larger employers are Intel and Hewlett Packard

Education is valued and Sacramento is home to the local campus of the California State University, Sacramento. The University of California is also represented with a campus in Davis, some fifteen miles west of the city.
